Welcome to Writing into the Black.

This is a newsletter about facing the universe's great, underlying truth: entropy. It’s about staring into the abyss without flinching and mapping out the stories we find there.

This is a place to explore the depths of hard science fiction and cosmic horror. Not as a teacher, but as a fellow traveler. I’m connecting the stars to uncover their constellations. Exploring the genres, the craft, and the literature that calls to us from the dark.

About the Author

Seumas in a leather jacket and Hemingway style reading glasses leaning againt the wall of an abandoned warehouse.

I grew up in Oregon, and after a chaotic childhood, I chose to create order. I did that as a self-taught software architect for Sun Microsystems and Oracle.

I retired after twenty years in engineering, and a deepening health crisis left me homebound, and in bed, for seven years. That isolation became its own kind of Black.

Then, an unexpected spark ignited a new purpose. I returned to writing, the passion of my youth. The work is arduous, necessary… and exhilarating. Still homebound, but learning to walk again, one step at a time. I write full-time from a converted Cold War communications bunker—rebuilding a life, one word at a time.
